Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects were very recently a cover story of Indonesian Music Live magazine. Check out their interview below!
1. When did this band come together?
In 2008 when I was called to open for Paul Gilbert.
2. How did you come up with your band name?
Well, I recorded the first album Sandcastle by myself and it went by my own name. When I was called to open for Paul Gilbert a few months later, I needed to assemble a band to play my songs with. And that’s how Side Effects came into being. From then on we started functioning as a true band, but my name stuck in the band name for convenience sake. We wanted people to realize that it’s the continuation of the same project.
3. Tell us what it’s like when your on stage performing. What type of feeling do you get?
It’s different from gig to gig. It depends on many factors. It depends on my mood that day. It depends on how well all the step prior to the gig went. It depends on the crowd’s energy. But I can tell you that I love playing live. When all the cards are right, it’s just an amazing experience.
4. Do you have any embarrassing moments while performing?
Nah, not really. Occasionally I’ll bump my head on the microphone or trip over a cable, but that doesn’t make me embarrassed.
5. Where has been your favorite place you’ve performed?
Probably Heineken Jamming Festival in Milan, Italy last year.
6. Are you guys working on a new album right now? Or just focusing on touring?
We’re doing a little bit of both. We’re working on some new songs, but we’re not forcing anything.
7. Tell us about your fans and do you have a special name you call them?
You mean like Beliebers? 😀 No, we don’t have a special name for them. We’ve been very fortunate to have fans which are very supportive of us and who will always back us up whenever and wherever we need it.
8. If not music what do you think you’d be doing as careers?
A world without music would be a very sad one for me… Apart from music, I don’t really have any real interests. At least not something I could make a career out of. I like reading books, watching movies and so on, but I never heard of someone being a professional book reader (and I wouldn’t want to be a critic). I have an MD in information technology, so I’d probably end up doing that, although I’m not interested in that at all.
9. A lot of people today think that being in a band is easy and just fun. Tell us about the hard work that goes into being in a band?
Well, it is fun! There is a lot of work to do if you want to make it, but it’s not hard if you enjoy it!
10. Finish this sentence… “Ten years from now Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects will be…”
sunbathing nude in the Swiss Alps? Ok, no, that doesn’t sound right! 😀 Who knows? Hopefully, we’ll still be enjoying making music that we love!
